Program Overview: The America Reads Challenge Federal Work-Study program is a strong example of how students both give to and receive from the community. The program promotes access to college by helping students finance post-secondary education costs while offering these same students the opportunity to pursue community service. Duties & Responsibilities: Tutors work directly with children in our Community Health Centers waiting areas to improve their reading proficiency skills. Tutors perform one-on-one work with individual children or small groups of children. Tutor schedules are set at the beginning of each quarter by using an online calendar to sign-up for shifts. Qualifications:
  • Open and warm demeanor; a passion for literacy; and a strong desire to work with young people
  • Excellent communication and English language skills (multilingual skills preferred: Spanish)
  • Ability to operate without direct supervision
  • Time management skills
  • Consistent and accurate documentation of hours
  • Access to reliable transportation (no reimbursement for personal vehicle use)
  • A personal commitment to community building and practicing cultural humility
