Position Overview The Teaching Assistant (TA) will support the instruction and delivery of Lab Diagnosis Lab (CS619L). This position is designed for students with strong laboratory, diagnostic, and organizational skills who can assist faculty in ensuring a safe, supportive, and effective learning environment. The TA plays a vital role in reinforcing laboratory skills, assisting with check-offs, and supporting student success in a hands-on educational setting. Responsibilities Instructional Support

  • Assist faculty during weekly lab sessions with set-up, clean-up, and organization of equipment and materials.
  • Demonstrate proper techniques (e.g., phlebotomy, injections, diagnostic testing) under faculty supervision.
  • Provide supplemental guidance to students during in-class activities, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Help administer and track in-class skills check-offs (20 total across the term).
  • Assist with case-based laboratory application assignments by facilitating discussion and answering clarifying questions (without grading).

Student Support

  • Serve as a near-peer resource for students to ask questions and practice techniques.
  • Encourage professional behavior, patient safety, and proper laboratory etiquette.
  • Support students who need additional practice during open lab (Week 9).

Course Management

  • Maintain lab supplies and report shortages or equipment issues to faculty.
  • Ensure lab coats, gloves, sharps disposal, and other safety requirements are consistently followed.
  • Assist in proctoring and logistics of the practical exam (Weeks 11–12).
  • Monitor attendance as needed and help manage
  • Moodle submissions or communication reminders.

Learning Outcomes for the TA By the end of the term, the TA will:

  • Strengthen mastery of laboratory diagnostic procedures.
  • Gain mentorship and instructional experience in a laboratory teaching environment.
  • Develop organizational and leadership skills relevant to clinical education.

Qualifications:

Qualifications

  • Successful completion (or concurrent enrollment with advanced standing) of prerequisite laboratory skills courses.
  • Demonstrated competency in phlebotomy, injections, urinalysis, microscopy, and other diagnostic techniques covered in the syllabus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to support peers respectfully and professionally.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with academic and clinical standards.
  • Familiarity with Moodle and basic technology skills preferred.

Time Commitment

  • Weekly lab sessions: 2 hours per assigned section (Tuesdays 2:00–3:50 PM or Thursdays 2:00–3:50 PM).
  • Preparation/cleanup time: ~1 hour per week.
  • Exam weeks: Additional hours during Weeks 11–12 for practical exam support.
  • Estimated total: 3–5 hours per week, depending on course needs.
